European corn borer

In Ukraine, the butterfly is widespreaded in the forest-steppe and steppe zone, the most harmful in the western forest-steppe.
The cutworm damages corn, hemp, millet, hops, sunflower, develops on thick-stacked weeds.
The butterfly is 26-32 mm in size, the front wings of the male are brownish-brown with a wide light dentate stripe along the outer edge and a dark spot near the middle of the anterior margin; in the females, the front wings are lighter, white-yellow or light brown.
The cutworm 20 - 25 mm, gray-yellow with a red tint and a longitudinal stripe on the back; head and shield of the storm.
Puppet 18 - 20 mm, yellowish brown.
Cutworm hibernate  in the stems of damaged plants, in the middle of May - in early June are paid.
Butterflies are flying in the phase ejection panicle corn.
Females lay eggs from the bottom of the leaf 15 to 20 pieces;  the egg stage lasts from 3 to 14 days.
The cutworm are populated in the axils of the leaf, under the wrappers of the corncob, they squirt in the middle of the stem where they feed.
When they have finished feeding, they remain in the damaged stalk for wintering.
In the southern part of caterpillars of the first generation at once plummeted, and in August-September the second generation develops.
The endoparasitis of the stem butterfly is: Ichneumonidae - Diadegma terebrans Graw., D.crassicornis Graw., Itoplectis melanocephala Graw., Scambus nigricans Thoms .; from the Braconidae family - Chelonus sp., Ch. ianity z, ch. Panasonic oculator, Ch. Annelipes Wesm., Apantel Thompsoni Lgl., A. Gabriel Gaut. e Riel., Habrobracon hebetor Say., Rogas testaceus Spin., Zele albitarsus spin., Macrocentrus grandii Goid .; from the family Tachinidae - Pseudoperichaeta insidiosa R.D., Clemelis hullata Mg., Eumea mitis Mg., Lydella thompsomi Hert.

Protection measures. Destruction of weeds; timely harvesting of corn; deep autumn plowing with the preliminary treatment of stubble harrow BDT-7 or BDT-10.
From biological means, this is a two-time production of trichograms at the beginning of laying eggs and a week later.
At EPPS in corn in the phase of 6 - 8 leaves and after ejection panicle corn three laying of eggs per 100 plants and 1 - 2 cutworm per plant, it is recommended to use insecticides Bi-58, Fastak, Nurel D.
