Flax – one of the main technical cultivations and the main spinnable crop of Ukraine, that gives the fiber and oil for various industries, but also is important as nutritional and medical plant. By flax cultivation 3 types of prized products are obtained: high-quality fiber, oil and industrial raw materials (chaff). Fiver is characterized by high technological properties - strength, flexibility, thinness.
Durability level surpasses twice more than cotton and three times more than woolen. It is used to make a lot of household, industrial, packing and packaging of tissues. They are durable, resistant to decay, with high hygienic quality. Flax seeds contain mucous substances (about 12%), pectin, fat oil (30-40%), composed of glycerides linoleic (35-40%), linolenic (25-35%) and oleic (15-20%), palmitic and stearic acids cyanogenic glycoside linamaryn (1.5%), linamaraza enzyme, 20-25% protein, sugars, carotene and so on. The seeds contain 35-42% oil (Iodine number 165-192) and about 25% of protein components. The oil is widely used in nutritional, paint, soap, paper industries, electrical engineering and medicine.

Flax has a pivotal root system, the main root penetrates into the soil to a depth of 1 m. Flax is characterized by weak development of the root system, which does not exceed 9-15% of aboveground mass of plants. Flax is very sensitive to doses of mineral fertilizers. It is established according to soil fertility, the predecessor, and the fertilizer used under it. With straw harvest 50 quintals / ha (10 kg / ha fibers) flax takes from soil about 75-80 kg of nitrogen, phosphorus, 25-30 kg, 35-40 kg of potassium, boron 50-70 g, 60-70 g of copper, 320- 340 g of manganese, zinc 310-340 g, 5-6 g of cobalt. During using flax often put the full fertilizer with the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, nitrogen-poor soils - 1: 2: 2 at a dose of nitrogen 45 kg / ha; for richer - 1: 3: 3 or 1: 3: 4 at a dose of nitrogen 30 kg / ha. Excess nitrogen in conditions providing good moisture can cause lodging of stem, and in case of dry weather – burning of plants. Flax has negative reaction on chlorine. Adding 1 kg per 1 ha of forest reduces infestation of plants by bacteria to 16 times, especially in the fresh liming soils. The lime shouldn’t be added directly under flax. Flax should to be the third crop after liming.
